Spring, Almost
Sara Collie

A whimpering draws me to the window –
some suggestion of distress. I find, instead,

a feast in full flow, a pair of blackbirds
chirruping with delight as they hop about

the ivy, plucking berries from its branches
in the pale March sun. My human ears

don’t know how to decipher their cries –
I have to look a little closer, learn to notice

the quiet song that abundance sings
while I’m busy seeking signs of disaster.
